SON Threatens To Sanction Bakers Working In Unsanitary Environs

SON (Standard Organisation of Nigeria) has issued a warning saying that it will begin sanctioning any baker found to be operating in
unsanitary surroundings. This is an attempt to curb the spread of Lassa Fever in the Country.

Mr Sunday Badewole, the Osun state Coordinator of SON, was the one to give out the warning at a seminar organised for members of the Association of Master Bakers and Confectionery Of Nigeria held on Friday in Osogbo.

Mr Badewole said that the exposure of the materials used in baking, flour for instance, to rodents was unhygienic.

"Preventing the spread of Lassa Fever and maintaining  clean factory environment is a collective effort and that is why we appeal to master bakers to keep their factories protected from rodents and pests."

The SON official said that the seminar was to educate the master bakers on hygienic practices required in bread baking and help improve their knowledge on good manufacturing practices.

Badewole encouraged the master bakers to make it their duty to always check for production and expiry date, manufacturers' address and the the Nigerian Industrial Standard (NIS) mark of quality on every baking material purchased. He also urged the master bakers to ensure their products get SON Mandatory Conformity Assessment Programme Certificate.
